Međimurje is the northernmost and at the same time the smallest Croatian region with only three cities (Čakovec, Prelog and Mursko Središće). In recent years, tourists increasingly recognize the values of Međimurje as a tourist pearl, making it one of the most desirable rural tourist destinations. Likewise, its nature attracts a large number of business companies, for which many choose Međimurje as a location for Teambuilding and retreats.
Did you know that the area of Međimurje, namely village Peklenica, was the first oilfield found in Croatia? The locals claim that the first oil exploration concession in the world was issued in 1858 in Peklenica, which means Peklenica would've been the birthplace of the oil industry. The oil exploration had far-reaching consequences that affected today's tourist offer. During the search for new oil foundations, excavation has found a source of underground thermal water. Thanks to this "random" discovery of thermal waters, Međimurje has become a true wellness destination.
Visiting Međimurje can not be completed without tasting one of the best wines in Croatia. The white wine is the most common and popular, and the most famous sorts are Graševina, Moslavac, Traminac and others. Certainly, lovers of black wines here will also find something for themselves. The best way to experience all the magnificence of Međimurje and to try some of the local delicacies is to go along the Wine Road. With over 20 wineries, this is certainly one of the most recognizable tourist products of Međimurje.
