Omiš, Central Dalmatia - Top sights and holiday destinations

The city of Omiš is located at the mouth of the Cetina River. With its excellent connections to the mainland, Omiš was once an important Adriatic port. This was maintained in a fishing and naval tradition, but also in piracy! Two surviving forts are witnesses of this time - Mirabella (known also as Peovica) and Starigrad, or Fortica. They commanded views of Omiš and large areas of land and sea. Today their stunning vantage points can be enjoyed by all visitors. The Omiš Riviera was likewise known for the handcrafting of sailboats. Several replicas constructed in the local shipyard are accurate mementos.

The villages of Staro Duće, Zeljovići, Krug and Staro Jesenice ("Staro" meaning "old") have been refurbished as ethnic environmental museums. Their three hundred stone cottages testify to the way of life in the olden days.

The quaint atmosphere of fishing villages can be felt all over the coastal area and beyond. Opportunities for swimming and tanning in untouched nature abound. Ruskamen is a favorite spot for windsurfing. Stanići, Pisak i Marušići attract families with children, while the Mimice are equally popular with all.

The sort of heritage that few can boast of makes the Omiš Riviera ideal for enjoying cultural and natural sights. Omiš is the cradle of Dalmatian a capella folk singing, and the home of the genre's chief event, the Dalmatian choir festival.
For a taste of the exotic, be sure not to miss the "Crazy leaps", where contestants compete not only in innovative diving, but also in naming the dives creatively.
For the "Pirate night", you can sail into the period when swords and galleys were the area's bread and butter. A reenactment will bring to life a thirteenth-century sea battle between the pirates and Venetians.
The romantic spirit will enjoy exploring the high seas in a sailboat - an excellent opportunity for making marital vows.
To immerse yourselves in the charms of nature, do not miss the Radmanove Mlinice park of nature, Velika Gubavica and Mala Gubavica falls, or try rafting on the Cetina river.
